Rare Tom O. Posted November 13, 2015 Author #26 Share Posted November 13, 2015 The group was 2 violins, a bass, who often played a 3rd violin and a piano player. If I remember 3 blonds and a brunette. The traditional string quartet consists of 2 violins, 1 viola, and 1 cello. But, sometimes there are substitutions depending on availability of musicians. If there is a substitution, someone has to arrange the music to fit the new ensemble.
Megsie1000 Posted November 13, 2015 #27 Share Posted November 13, 2015 We just had the duo (piano/violin) last year on our January Westerdam Caribbean cruise. They were just OK. I may be a tough judge, though, because I am a violinist and a violin teacher. They were playing things that my 12-year old can play but not in the right style, IMO. Some of that may have been cultural difference in how to interpret Vivaldi? I don't know. I did not spend a whole lot of time there after the first night. I have been on other cruises with quartets that were much better. I don't know if the Westerdam experience was an anomaly or whether the quality is just going down. I would look forward to hearing the Lincoln Center performers - sounds like something that would be just up my alley.
