Nearly Comprehensive

Greetings, I have a question about travel insurance.

Our upcoming 9-nighter has our family of five (DH, DW, DS16, DD14 and DS12) flying into Orlando; Magic Kingdom for a day; a resort-only day; a 4-day Bahamas cruise on Carnival; and three days at Universal before flying home.

I want to buy travel insurance which will protect us against losses between the first payment and the end of our trip. AIG's Travel Guard Gold seems to be a popular choice, with CFWR and additional medical evacuation coverage available as options.

Medical care on the boat and in the Bahamas is in-network for my employer's health plan. As a cost-savings measure, should I shop for "nearly" comprehensive plans which don't include medical?

Thank you!

You could, but the biggest cost in comprehensive insurance is the cancellation and interruption cost. You can purchase medical only without the cancellation, but it is not possible to purchase cancellation without the medical. That said, you would do well to look at some of the policies with lower medical limits ($10K for example) since your personal medical policy covers you.

Do look carefully at the covered reasons to determine if you need CFAR coverage and the requirements you must meet to include that.
