Tax while drinking in Miami

Hello, I have read that even if you have the UBP, any drinks ordered prior to leaving Miami will be subject to a port tax. Does anyone know roughly how much that tax is?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

We were on the Breakaway in September and it was about .50 if I remember correctly, I think for the first 2 hours you paid tax.

I believe it's the 7% sales tax that everyone pays in Miami-Dade County, not a port tax. It would be based on the regular selling price of the drink. On the New Years Getaway cruise, I had 4 or 5 drinks while in port and it totaled up to about $4 and change. While in port, they make you sign a receipt for each drink, which I was told somehow is related to the tax. Once at sea, I never had to sign a piece of paper to get a drink.

We paid 77 cents each on drinks that would have been $10.99 each without the UBP while we were on the Star sailing away from Tampa. I believe the 7 percent tax is a statewide tax, so it would apply to any sailing from a Florida port.
