Navigating around Seattle

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving at our hotel (Edgewater or Marriott Waterfront - have to decide- if you have any opinions on either I'd love to hear them) around noon and then we want to go to the Space Needle, Glass, and then the Market.

First, do you think we have enough time and second, is the best and fastest way around just getting a cab. Don't think I would have trouble from hotel to Space Needle but after Glass blowing are they easily accessible and then from the Market. I also think it is walkable from the Market back to hotel...can anyone confirm that?

Sorry you are not geting any replies.....we really like the Mayflower hotel, it is probably not quite as upscale as those you mentioned, nor on the water, but it is very nice. Easy to walk to the market, and I think you can walk to the space needle or take the monorail. By glass, are you referring to the Chihuly in the garden? LOVE IT! The Mayflower is also very convenient from the airport - lightrail is about a block away and they arrange shuttles to the dock if your ship is at the more distant pier. Enjoy your trip!

I'm local. My favorite hotel is the Edgewater. It has a wonderful northwest ambiance and is different than the mass market chain hotels. There's a lot to do and see nearby on the waterfront, including the aquarium. You can walk easily to the Pike Place Market. I'd consider a cab for your Space Needle visit just to maximize the touristing time.

I am going to make a couple assumptions. First this is about an Alaskan Cruise so I will assume Summertime? Depending on which cruiseline you are on depends which pier you will need to get too. NCL, Celebrity and RCL use the pier right next to Edgewater and across from Marriot (sort of). Princess and HAL use one 20 minutes away by Magnolia. I also assume Glass means Chihully Glass and not the Glass Eye Studio in Freemont. You didn't mention cost so I also assume you have checked Hotel prices in Seattle this summer and know the rates are north of 200 for a "Deluxe Room" (read that as lowest end room avail) in a 3 star.

I have stayed at the Edgewater twice but offseason. Deluxe rooms are small and resemble a plain motel room facing the parking lot away from the water. We paid extra for the larger water facing rooms. Those were really nice but around 75-100 bucks more. Summer will be a small fortune. Edgewater is an old hotel.

Marriot Waterfront is in a bit better spot. Much easier to walk to Pike Place Market and Westlake Center. Space Needle is a longer walk and remember, Seattle is built on a hillside. Chihully Glassis at the Space Needle.

My take on this is a vote to Marriot, book sooner than later and either Taxi to the Space Needle or take the Monorail from Westlake Center (Couple blocks east of Pike Place). You can walk to the other places.

Thank you! Yes all your assumptions were correct. We are sailing on the NCL Pearl, August 14th. Coming into Seattle from NY around noon. We figured we could check in and then see at least the Space Needle and Chihully Glass, then go to the Market to roam around and have dinner.

I actually have rooms booked at both the Edgewater and the Marriott already and yes you are right they are on the expensive side...I think the Edgewater (city view) is around $395 and the Marriott is about $450. I am also leaning toward the Marriott. I wanted to settle on that within the week so that I am not tying up reservations that someone else may want.

It sounds like I will have no problem getting a cab from the Space Needle to the Market and it sounds like I can take the rail from the two as well. I know we will be tired from flying and I just want to make it as easy as possible for everyone.

Any suggestions for dinner? We have a mixed group....including one who is allergic to fish....can eat in a fish restaurant as long as there are other things on the menu.

The Marriott is directly across from where the Pearl docks. Its also about 5 blocks from Westlake Center where the Monorail goes out of. You are probably only walking up two blocks before it starts getting level. The monorail is a leftover from the 1965 Worldsfair, worth going on at least once. I think tickets are like 5 bucks pp rt, The Monorail takes you right to the Space Needle and Chihullys. If you want to "Ride The Ducks" that tourist ride is right there also. Pike Place Market is about one block from the Marriott uphill. We have eaten there before. Can't think of the name of the place but its like a rustic bar but really nice. Its the largest restaurant/bar and downstairs of the Market.

We did the Pearl last August to Alaska. I looked at staying in Seattle the night before but Hotel prices were what you are finding. We used to go to Seattle and stay a night and go to the Comedy clubs or a concert. We didn't go out for dinner, what we would do was go to the Happy Hours as there are all kinds of nice Lounges/bars with great food items on Happy hour menus. Otherwise there a lot of restaurants around, Ivars, Anthony's, McCormick and Schmidts, You are right on the waterfront which has all these and a lot more. Most are a Seafood theme but will have other items. You may have a tough time finding a place for Bfast. I can't think of anywhere around Marriott for Bfast...... There are Starbucks all over and we have eaten there in the mornings. The original Starbucks is at Pike Place Market. FYI most of the small food places at the Market are rip offs, small portions big prices. Look for an actual sit down restaurant.

My favorite hotel is the Grand Hyatt. Its about 7+/-blocks east of Marriot. Might be cheaper. 400 is rather high even for high season. Just a thought. Rooms seem much bigger than the normal small Seattle hotel room.
