We are flying into JFK Fri 20.5.16 for the sail on Summit 22.5.16. We have booked the Residence Inn, Elizabeth for the 2 nights but are now wondering if that will be Ok location wise? We would like somewhere to stay close by some shops and places to eat.

You're going to have to book a car service anyway to get to NJ from JFK, so I'd look at the Marriott Courtyard in Jersey City which is $199 plus tax for a King. This will put you right at the Newport PATH station for easy access to midtown and downtown NYC and across the street from the Newport Mall. In addition you will have a choice of restaurants and spectacular views of Manhattan from the riverfront Boardwalk.

PATH is $2.75/pp to go to Manhattan. If you stay at Residence Inn you will pay $23-26/pp round trip to NY.

Car Service to the port is about the same for both hotels. However, there is an inexpensive accessible light rail/cab option to the port from Jersey City for <$20 for 2 people if you can roll your luggage.

Be sure you understand how PATH works on a Friday and a Saturday.

Here's a restaurant listing for the area:

Feel free to ask more questions. Our family of 5 (DH, DD, DS, and DGD) spent a long weekend at the Courtyard last year.

As usual Carol your help is spot on! Going to book car service with Carmel from the airport and to the port. Is there any particular restaurant you would recommend for American home style type food?

I'm not the best person to recommend restaurants. When we stayed there, we were off to wedding events in NYC for our dining.

Folks have recommended the Brownstone Diner which would qualify as American home style food. http://www.brownstonediner.com/family-supper

They serve breakfast lunch and dinner. To get there it looks like you could take the light rail to Jersey Ave. https://www.njtransit.com/pdf/LightRail/sf_lr_hblr_map.pdf

  • 3 weeks later...

Seeking help again Carol! I have quotes from Carmel & Dial7 from the Courtyard to Cape Liberty. Dial7 is half the price of Carmel so I was going to proceed with the reservation but I was surprised to see that they want payment now. Do you think it is safe to leave it a few weeks or just bite the bullet and pay?

Thank you as always

What are the two quotes you got?

$81 on Carmel $41 on Dial7

$81 is high. $41 is just a little low, but more in the expected range.

Why don't you try calling the Courtyard to see if they recommend anyone. I know folks have done this and perhaps someone will post their particular experience. I would expect about $55 including tip. I'm a public transit person, so I would be on the light rail for $2.25/pp ($1.10 for seniors) and a $10-12 local Bayonne cab into the port.
