2-Way Radio / TEXT MESSAGING ???

I have brought 2-way radio's on our 3 last cruises. I have tried various models, but none of them seem to work good enough, depending how far apart we were on the ship.

 

Is there some kind of model (radio or whatever) that allows you to text message, instead of, or along with, speaking????

I have a Skypager from Skytel. This allows me to send and receive short email messages from anywhere. Problem is that you will pay about $30/Month for the service. It may be possible to get a short term contract. I also have a set of 2 Meter walkie talkies that have a range of about 8 miles. I am not sure if those can be used in foreign countires. I know I have a license restriction in Canada.
