biojeep Posted April 30, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2016 Has anyone stayed at Nord Haven while visiting Denali? Has good reviews on Tripadvisor. We were thinking of switching from Denali Princess Lodge because we keep reading how busy & large it is. Would appreciate input from experienced travelers. Hopefully you have a car as it is needed to go from the Nord Haven to Denali. We stayed there several years ago and really liked it. It was a basic motel type but the rooms were large (at least ours was) and the staff was really great. Really great value compared to the Denali hotels. Just across the driveway is Rosie's Diner which was wonderful. Lots of food for very little cost. We got the bag lunch from them to take with us for the Denali shuttle. Again, very nice lunch for very little and a lot of variety to choose from. Edited April 30, 2016 by pizzalady1
AKStafford Posted May 1, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 1, 2016 I've stayed there several times over the years. It's a good place to stay. But you'll need to be in a rental car.
skrapngal Posted May 1, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 1, 2016 We're doing a DIY land tour in May 2017, this is our plan B. Given that our plan A has not responded to phone messages and emails, looks like we will be staying at motel Nord Haven. We will have a rental. mapleleaves Posted May 1, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 1, 2016 The Denali Park Hotel is another budget friendly option. The fridge and microwave are a nice bonus. I haven't stayed there but BQ seems to manage a visit or 2 with them every summer. Again, it's about 10 miles from the park entrance so you need a car. If this is for 2017, I wouldn't give up on plan A just yet. Most of these businesses are seasonal and they aren't up and running yet.
ubarpants Posted May 3, 2016 #7 Share Posted May 3, 2016 We stayed there last summer and thought it was great! It's away from the hustle and bustle and you drive by 49th State Brewing every time you go to or from the park. Prices at the hotel were reasonable and the breakfast was decent. We had a really early shuttle bus time one morning and ordered lunch in advance, which was huge and tasty, plus they also added breakfast in there too. Do keep in mind that the summer is road construction season in Alaska, so the time it takes to get to and from Healy might be quite different from how it looks on the map. We did make friends with a nice young flagger from Fairbanks since we somehow ended up at the start of the line every time.
biojeep Posted May 3, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted May 3, 2016 Thanks ubarpants. The motel has been bought by new owners so we are hoping that they will be as friendly as the previous owners. Would you say that we should budget 30 minutes or longer to get to the WAC for the shuttle?
