Cruisin' Chick Posted October 24, 2005 #56 Share Posted October 24, 2005 I am one of those women who never "awwww" over a baby. Still don't. Didn't even talk baby talk to my daughter. I do acknowledge she has changed me for the better. And she gives my hubby and I great pride many times over. We try to include her in planning our trips because we love going with her. She's gone on five cruises so far and has behaved on them and enjoyed them. We probably wouldn't go on certain cruiselines because they are "less child friendly." Maybe dandycandy should go on them. Of course, I hope the people on that cruise don't mind someone as judgemental as she is. In the meantime we will be giving certain cruiselines our family business. cruiserforlife Posted October 24, 2005 #59 Share Posted October 24, 2005 I agree completely... Leave your kids at home and enjoy each other... There will be many times where you will enjoy a family vacation.. I third this opinion. On our last cruise,a young couple spent the better part of every meal in the dining room shuttling their very young baby back and forth to the lobby...but only after an extended crying period. This happened about every 15 minutes like clockwork.I wasn't amused. It figures.Whenever we go out to eat,9 times out of 10 we usually encounter a screaming child or two at the next table.Never fails. I realize children will cry but I can assure you,my mother (may she rest in peace)would NEVER have EVER allowed that to happen in public. We were taught to behave in public and were escorted outside immediately if we disturbed anyone else, especially during dinner. It's almost like when a neighbor's dog barks at night and does nothing about it.Don't they hear it too?

imsulin2 Posted October 25, 2005 #62 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Jeez' date=' Tijm & Kathleen, when you have a child, will you either stay at home for the next ten years or hire babysitters even time you go to the market? We wanted until our daughter was 23 months before we took a vacation just because my hubby thought it might be a hassle going with her (and we didn't want to burden our aging parents with a very active child). Turned out it was a very enjoyable cruise (3 days) with a hotel stay afterwards (to see the tall ships, which she enjoyed too). maybe she doesn't remember all of the details or even when we took her to Sea World when she was one. Or even the music I played to my tummy when I was pregnant (a range from Beethoven to show tunes to Eric Clapton to the Beatles to the GoGos, and more). Growing up, she heard a lot of different types of music--and often she asks us in the car, if we have that song on CD so she can listen to it again. Will your children know who Diana Krull or Roy Rogers are/were? Tthe idea is that experiences, whether remembered or not, cause a reaction in the brainm (can you tell I have a degree in psychology?). When my daughter was first born, a friend who has a masters in speech audiology, told me to expose her to as much language, especially foreign language, as possible early on for the same reason.[/quote'] Brainm?? When I got my post-grad. degree in Psychology, there was no mention of this word. However, when I was pregnant with Number 5, I had no need to play soothing musical excerpts from recorder to belly. He was able to hear the verbal interactions of his four older siblings in utero, and the first thing he uttered after birth was, "Keep your hands off of my Transformers!" He was, however, exposed to a "foreign" language right off the bat. I'm not sure what you'd call it, but I called it swearing". Yes - those found guilty had to put a quarter in the "Curse Jar". It paid for his college edcation. Aside: I prided myself in taking wonderful pictures of our "family" trips while they were infants/toddlers! Today, they just look at them and say, "Why did you put me into such a dorky bathing suit?" They don't remember a thing about these trips. I swear! This is how I was raised and how I raised my kids and how they are now raising their kids. If everyone grew up to be respectful of others we wouldn't be having this thread or the threads about chair hogs, seat savers, line crashers or generally rude obnoxious people. spongerob Posted October 25, 2005 #64 Share Posted October 25, 2005 And I think anyone polite and brave ( polite + brave = foolhardy?) enough to ask the question, probably knows when enough is enough. There are enough parents out there practicing questionnable discretion when it comes to how their children behave; let's encourage the better ones to get out there, not scare them off. meemeec Posted October 25, 2005 #66 Share Posted October 25, 2005 let's encourage the better ones to get out there, not scare them off. Exactly!!! Everyone enjoys their vacations differently...some with their kids....some without. Getting worked up about this subject is pointless and will not change any minds. jennew Posted October 25, 2005 #69 Share Posted October 25, 2005 My little guy was 5 on his first cruise. He was an angel!! I had no problem giving in to his pleas to book another for this year. If everyone grew up to be respectful of others we wouldn't be having this thread or the threads about chair hogs, seat savers, line crashers or generally rude obnoxious people." Oh, excuse my typo. I guess the rest of you figured it out. Anyway, I wanted to point out that I'm not one of these "awww" types but even before having my child, I didn't mind seeing children around on my vacations. We haven't seen the obnoxious, elevator-button-pushing, running around at 1am kids that have been referred to on these boards. We have seen other behavior that have caused us to roll our eyes about...from adults. If that's being judgmental...
Cruisin' Chick Posted October 25, 2005 #72 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Again, as have been mentioned many times on CC, if you want to avoid children, try the higher priced cruiselines and the longer cruises. Or go to an adults-only resort. Or try during September (after Labor Day), October, November (before Thanksgiving), early December, January (after the second week), February, late April, early May. Of course, you may risk running into homeschooled kids or kids on break from their year-round schools.
Lynda90 Posted October 25, 2005 #73 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Nothing wrong with well-behaved children on a cruise. As long as the parents are responsible and respectful of those around them, cannot see any problem. It is certainly the choice of those who are cruising whether or not they bring their children. Some people won't go on a vacation without them and some won't go with them. It's really an individual choice that each parent has to make. If the child is fussy at dinner, it is up to the parents to minimize this problem. Those who travel without children should not have to be subjected to a fussy child. This is, of course, just my opinion.

I know what to do when an infant cries spontaneously in public, but I would pay top dollar for her secret to preventing it from happening. Did she stay home until her children no longer cried spontaneously or did she have another method?
