Marina de Carrara to Cinqe Terre

We'll be in MdC in a couple of weeks time and were hoping to get to Cinque Terre. The ferry does actually run but it doesn't get back until 5.45 pm and the ship departs at 7.00 pm; too close for comfort. How easy is it to get the train there; or anywhere of real interest from MdC?
