KETCHIKAN — Substantial repair work for Berth 3 at the port of Ketchikan was finished Tuesday afternoon — almost one week ahead of schedule — and the facility was able to receive cruise ships Wednesday.

The Celebrity Infinity was being docked just before 2 p.m. June 3, when it scraped along part of the berth, damaging breasting dolphins and catwalks and puncturing the ship's hull above the waterline.

Ketchikan City Manager Karl Amylo awarded a $928,580 repair contract June 7 to Anchorage-based Turnagain Marine Construction. The contract had a July 5 completion deadline.

Wish it was juat a bit sooner. We had to anchor and tender when we were there on the Pearl on the 24th.

We saw the Infinity come in as we were living Ketchikan. She still has a big dent in her side. She has just wasn't as obvious.

They were lucky to be able to get the contractors in there as quick as they did - this is the high season for construction in AK.

Also in another article they stated that some initial work done by a local engineering firm to shore up the piers made the final repairs by Turnagain faster.

They were also facing a six ship port day and could really not afford to have three ships tendering.

Maybe there was some incentive to get done early :D
