Carnival Dream-2 cat room upgrade??

I am booking an 8 day on the Dream and am looking at a cove balcony. I get a past guest offer for an additional $20 I can get a 2 category room upgrade. When I do a mock booking of that offer vs just the cove balcony I get the same set of rooms available. How does this work? I've never understood the category upgrades so please can someone explain this? On the website there are only a handful of cove balconies available at this time. Thanks.

Cove balcony is the lowest category of balcony so no point in paying for a category upgrade unless you want a balcony on a higher deck.

I would do an upgrade if you wanted to be higher in the ship. Personally, I loved the cove Balcony on the Breeze. We loved feeling close to the water. Most of the balconies over look the Lanai Panorama deck then the ocean. Not sure if this matters to you or not.

Another cove lover. Dream, Magic, Breeze and now Vista are the only ships in the world that have them. If you're booking a balcony on one of these four it's crazy not to try one as you can do a higher balcony on most ships the next time you cruise.

I think 2 category upgrade is often misunderstood. Many seem to think it means interior to balcony. (not saying this is what you though Maldenmusic) If you book interior you will remain in an interior even with an upgrade. It will just be in, according to Carnival, a more desirable location.

Maldenmusic, your situation is a good example. There is only one category of COVE balconies. They are all classed 7C. So no upgrade if you want to stay in a cove.

If you were booking a regular balcony then there are 8A, 8B, 8C......

8 means a balcony and the letter denotes "desirability" An 8C may be mid ship on one deck But go up a deck and it will be aft and bow with 8D mid ship.

And for the record, I really like coves too. Just be careful of location. Some staterooms under the galley can be very noisy.
