Missing the boat!!!

Recommended Posts

Several years ago my DH and I were on a Caribbean Cruise. On our second night out, around midnight we woke up because the ship was moving very slowly. We went out on our verandah and saw a lot of lights and an island. We were supposed to be at sea. I said I thought we were sailing close to Cuba. The next day we found out a woman had checked herself out of the hospital against medical advice after suffering a major heart attack because she did not want to miss her cruise. Yes, the second night out she had another heart attack and was too unstable for an airlift. The ship diverted 90 miles to Guantanamo Bay to get her treatment. We missed our next port of call.

Don't get me wrong, missing a port of call is not all that big a deal to me. But, this woman put her life at risk because she did not want to miss her cruise. I don't know the cost of this medical evacuation or who ended up paying the bill. I do know her entire family left the ship with her.

Also, FYI, a cruise ship can get hung up on a sand bar. Read the early history of Carnival Cruise Line. That is what happened the first time they sailed out of Miami.;)

I can't imagine putting a cruise before your health...WOW!

This past June, our daughter got married in Ocho Rios Jamaica. We had 20 family members join us, all staying various lengths of time. Once they had all left, we had reservations for a couple of quiet days in Negril. As our incredible driver (she took care of ALL of us for several events!), was heading out of Ochi, she pointed to a burned up car. Apparantly a few days before, there was a protest regarding the police and pay raises and this car was torched leaving traffic backed up for miles. The ships had to send representatives out to the traffic jam to get passengers stranded in it she told us. She wasn't sure if they were on ship's excursions or not. Had to be scary to be caught in THAT traffic jam!

We have been on cruise lines who constantly change the ship's time to the islands time and others that stay with SHIP's Time. It was posted each night in the ship's newsletter slipped under the door. Daughter and I read ours after returning to the cabin LATE, it said to change our watches, we did and reported for our tour in the morning ONE hour early! Better early than late-but it can be confusing.
