Cherbourg Port to Town Options

Can anyone share recent information on Cherbourg in addition to what the website What's In Port says?

After our tour of the landing beaches, we want to walk around town prior to returning to the ship.

However, on Google Maps, it says that you have to walk around the port and there is no direct walkway to town (takes about 40 minutes.) We realize that Google doesn't always plot out everything correctly, however, just curious if some folks here have more information.

Has anyone walked to and from the port to Cherbourg? Does it take just 10 minutes?

Has anyone taken the shuttle? Where does it take you in town? Where is the drop off point in town?

From the What's In Port website

If the weather is fine it is only a 10 to 15-minute pleasant walk to the center of Cherbourg, so a shuttle bus is not really needed.

Shuttle bus linking the transatlantic cruise terminal of Cherbourg to town center are free for passengers during their call. Some cruise lines may charge 7 euro for this service.

Is this shuttle run by the port authority or by the cruise ships themselves? We will be in Cherbourg next June and want to rent a car, though am not sure there's a rental agency in port and we might need to go into town. Hence the shuttle service interests me:)

It seems like it may be the city that runs the shuttle, and there may be cruise ship options as well. However, I believe that there is an Enterprise rental car pickup at the port. The Cherbourg Port website lists rental car pickup, shuttle and taxis.

Hopefully someone who has been there can post more information.
