jlz62 Posted August 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Fairbanks is our last stop in Alaska. Our tour ends Thursday morning and our flight leaves late afternoon (5:45pm). We will have most of the day to do some things on our own. Is it worth it to rent a car or just use a cab or car service for the day? Transfers to the Airport are including in the cruisetour. We will be staying at the Westmark and am looking at visiting the UA Museum. Thanks for any comments.
Cruzin4vacay Posted August 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 26, 2016 Our rental car was pretty inexpensive and was easy to rent and return. The airport is pretty small. I think you will need a car to visit the museum. Might be cheaper than a taxi actually. Also you could see about getting your luggage checked in when you pick the car up so you would have more time. The museum is great! Have fun!

The transit center is just a couple of short blocks from the Westmark, and the Blue line and the Red line both go to the University. $1.50 per person each way. http://fnsb.us/transportation/Pages/MACS.aspx
mapleleaves Posted August 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 26, 2016 if the pipeline isn't included in your cruisetour, it's an interesting stop to make if you have a car. Visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center. a photo at the antler arch will be a great memory of your Alaska visit. And there may be some gigantic vegetables and flowers in the garden. http://www.morristhompsoncenter.org/
georgie73 Posted August 26, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 26, 2016 (edited) If you do rent a car... The trails at Creamers Field are a lovely place to walk and the nature house there is excellent. The Tanana Valley Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Georgeson Botanical Gardens at UAF is lovely - and you might see reindeer in the fields across the road.
