Local Currency Required?

In a few days I depart on the Spirit for New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu.

I know I can use my credit card on board. Cashless effectively.

I am guessing that I have the option, for when I am at port to:

(1) Bring a little of the three currencies to cover whatever shore trips and expenses.

(2) Pay a lot more at a money changer who will surely be very nearby at the port.

I am planning to "wing it" and go for option (2). The exchange rate won't be too bad will it? Or do sucker rates apply?

I was in Europe this summer... at the currency exchanges, the rates were insanely higher than what I paid for currency buying it early through my bank... where I had paid like 1.11-1.19 per euro, they were charing 1.39-1.59 per euro depending on the location. Conversely, you could just use your credit card. It sounds like it may be too late anyway to buy currency. You may find semi-decent rates in the airport, but probably not as good as a bank could have bought them at.
