FLL to Miami port travel time

Can anyone help? Our airline is a direct flight to FLL. We are sailing from Miami. We are trying to figure out if it would be better or easier to stay the night before we sail in FLL or Miami. And how much time should we need to get back to FLL when we return to Miami?

Thanks.

It's normally about a 35-45 minute drive between FLL and the Port of Miami. However, if there's an accident or you try going during rush hour it can take 2 hours!

Also keep in mind on your return that if you're flying out of FLL on a winter/spring weekend the airport is extremely overcrowded with all the cruise pax from Port Everglades, as well as those from the Miami ships who use it. Allow a LOT of extra time as both the check-in and security lines are very very long!
