Guest Posted May 29, 2004 #101 Share Posted May 29, 2004
quote:
For a fine restaurant at home, I wear a nice pair of jeans. The guidelines do not say that jeans are prohibited, therefore, I will continue to wear them on non-formal evenings. I am following their guidelines that I dress the same as I would for a fine restaurant in my hometown. I fail to see why my jeans are not offensive when the ship is in port, but become the "degradation of social manners" just because it has returned to sea.

I'm wondering where your hometown is...? And I submit that if those fine restaurants at home pushed their dress guidelines rather than succumbing to whatever walks in the door, they’d probably go out of business. It’s the minority of customers that are pushing the envelope. I can tell you of conversations I’ve had with crewmembers who mourn the day that a more casual clientele started boarding the ships. And regarding cruise ships being neutral zones, I submit that in fact they are melting pots where a number of cultures come together. I guess it’s too much to ask that those who represent my culture put some effort into personal appearance, but again, it does not go unnoticed. ------------------------- Sun Princess, 03/2004; Pacific Princess, 07/2003; Star Princess, 05/2003; Grand Princess, 10/2002; Grand Princess, 10/2002; Sun Princess, 05/2001; Sun Princess, 04/2001; Sun Princess, 09/2000; Sun Princess, 09/2000; Regal Princess, 10/1999; Sun Princess, 08/1998; Holiday, 05/1998; Westerdam, 09/1997; Regal Princess, 11/1996; Royal Odyssey, 09/1995; Starward, 11/1993
dperry Posted May 30, 2004 #102 Share Posted May 30, 2004 geoherb, you are incorrect. On the princess patter for the diamond princess it clearly states that jeans ARE NOT allowed in the dining rooms.
cnmiranda Posted May 30, 2004 #103 Share Posted May 30, 2004 On Diamond Alaska 5/15 the patter only says no shorts or t-shirts. Where did it read that on your patter please? There were so many on our cruise wearing jeans. Thanks. 5kitty Posted May 30, 2004 #104 Share Posted May 30, 2004 While my husband or myself wouldn't wear Jeans to a "non-formal" night (we don't even bring them with us on a cruise), it wouldn't bother us if people showed up in them as long as they were clean and unripped. I would like to add that on several occassions, I have worn "longer length walking type shorts" with a nice top, sweater and sandals and been quite comfortable. My reasons for wearing the longer length shorts, is because I am comfortable, I could wear them at a fine restaurant (I live on the shorline in Connecticut) as long as I "dress them up a bit" and I really don't see any difference in wearing "longer length shorts" versus a short dressy type skirt. Whatever you wear, just please enjoy your cruise. 5kitty
spongerob Posted May 30, 2004 #105 Share Posted May 30, 2004 I think there must be more than one Pig Out Palace, Sharon. Sadly, this does nothing to improve the image of this state. (Oklahoma, state motto: Oklahoma is OK, now don't bogart them biscuits!") This is such a confusing subject. The most expensive jeans out there, and considered in the highest fashion, are ripped, shredded, and look as if they've been doused in hydrochloric acid before being dragged through the cattle pens. There is some justice in it, however - someone stupid enough (ooooh, there's that word again!!) to pay more for their haute couture jeans than I paid for my tux will be sent to their cabin to dress appropriately while I'm enjoying my vol-au-vent A la Reine. Sweet justice! Completed: Sea Princess, Royal Princess, Grand Princess (3X), Caribbean Princess, Golden Princess

twocats Posted June 1, 2004 #108 Share Posted June 1, 2004
Originally posted by bdjam: ......they also state passengers would dress as they would for a fine dining establishment on land. I’m sorry, to me that doesn’t mean casual wear – which jeans are. I realize that some people feel they can get away with “nice†jeans, but we all know darn well that those are the same jeans they wore out during the day. I realize my thinking is old school, but it seems pretty lazy to me not to at least shower and change for dinner. And whether or not anyone else is wearing jeans really has no significance…except there’s a bunch of people who are not proper. And before anyone implies that I’m saying that my experience is ruined because people are underdressed, far from it. It’s always nice to sit back and have a good snicker. _________________________________________ BJAM I'm confused, do you mean that you watch out for people in jeans and then "snicker" about them? Or am I not understanding your point, because in my book that is at least as rude as wearing jeans in a dining room where the rules have been posted. But why should Princess state the rules and then welcome people at the dining room door with out sending the jean wearers back to change. Also I think it's my businss if I shower or not. How much of my trip can another passenger decide if I am " being proper" or not?
