dpeck Posted November 11, 2005 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2005 If you are going to do any gambling, make sure you bring cash. Every time you use your sign and sail card you will be charged 3%. So if you use your card at the slots, or to get chips or money, you will be charged 3 %. The only notification of this charge is in small print under one of the ads in the Capers. Rare silentbob007 Posted November 11, 2005 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2005 I've always seen the signs listing the charge for this service ... and understood them, considering that's how much Carnival has to pay for you to use your credit card to get cash. GroupCruiser Posted November 11, 2005 #3 Share Posted November 11, 2005 I believe that is mentioned in the Welcome Aboard booklet that came with your docs as well. Should be no surprise.
dpeck Posted November 11, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted November 11, 2005 There were no signs on the Elation 11/05 only in the Capers. I asked the cashier why there were no signs posted and he just shrugged his shoulders.

No way you could miss it and certianly nothing to be "aware" of as though they are trying to pull a fast one or something
AppleValleyCruisers Posted November 11, 2005 #6 Share Posted November 11, 2005 Plus, I believe many people have posted that it is a cheaper way to access cash than through the ATM. (if it still has cash in it when and if you need it)
Stillfloatin' Posted November 11, 2005 #7 Share Posted November 11, 2005 I like both Carnival and NCL for different reasons, and enjoy cruising both lines, but one of the things I like about NCL is there is no charge for taking out cash on your room card. You are allowed up to $1000 per day. :D Like I said though, there are things I like about both lines.

I was on the Inspiration in September and it was clearly posted that there was a surchage for using the S&S Card in the casino. On top of that, when I went to the cage to get cash, the clerk there also told me of this surchage.

On top of that, when I went to the cage to get cash, the clerk there also told me of this surchage. It was the same for us, even if we had missed the signs, the cashier told us of the fee. You would also be charged this to cash a Travelers Check, she suggested going to the Pursers desk.
Astronomer Posted November 11, 2005 #10 Share Posted November 11, 2005 Noted - Sign and Sail card does not replace ATM card, bring cash. thanks :D
Marie213 Posted November 11, 2005 #11 Share Posted November 11, 2005 Do you know if the Carnival gift certificates that are put onto your sign and sail card are reduced by 3% if you use them in the casino?

SxyEbnyFem Posted November 12, 2005 #13 Share Posted November 12, 2005 Noted - Sign and Sail card does not replace ATM card, bring cash. thanks :D However, you can do like I did this last time: I knew exactly how much I wanted to spend on the cruise as well as in ports, called & placed this amount in advance on my S&S account & took out however much I needed for the ports at the casino so I wouldn't have to deal with the hassle of holding onto traveler's checks, credit cards, etc. Worked out perfectly for me & I even had cash coming back to me at the end of the cruise. :D 3% isn't really all that much of a surcharge folks. And, yes, this surcharge fee has been posted on both Carnival ships I have been on. Happy sailing, T.
jilly08 Posted November 12, 2005 #14 Share Posted November 12, 2005 I cashed traveler's checks at the casino on the Legend last January and I wasn't charged a fee. Has something changed since then?
gnomedog Posted November 12, 2005 #15 Share Posted November 12, 2005 Question... if you have guaranteed your S&S with a credit card, and you draw cash off the S&S in the casino, does it hit your credit card as a cash advance, or a purchase? This could be a huge additional hit if it goes on as a cash advance, at least on my credit cards. The interest rate is much higher. This would, of course, be in addition to the 3% charged by Carnival, right??
dpeck Posted November 12, 2005 Author #16 Share Posted November 12, 2005 Again, the 3% charge was NOT posted on the Elation. It is not in the documents given before sailing. Everyone was talking about it after getting their first bill, because unless they read the Capers they were unaware of it.
damonadrienne Posted November 12, 2005 #17 Share Posted November 12, 2005 I heard a positive regarding this.....Someone told me that if you have shipboard credit, you can go to the casino and take out chips from you sail n sign (i.e. the shipboard credit), "play" for awhile, then cash them in. Has anyone done this...is this true?
TXParrothead Posted November 12, 2005 #18 Share Posted November 12, 2005 I have never been charged for cashing travelers checks.
INCHARGE Posted November 12, 2005 #19 Share Posted November 12, 2005 You would also be charged this to cash a Travelers Check, she suggested going to the Pursers desk. On my October 30th cruise, I cashed several $100. travelers checks, and always got back 5 $20 bills. There was never a charge for these. :)

jetskier Posted November 16, 2005 #23 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Bumping this as I haven't seen an answer to my question yet. Can anyone advise on this? Thanks!!:) Easy, it is a purchase as the amount is charged at the very end of your cruise as a single item. Dave
