cokersouth Posted February 19, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2017 Can anyone suggest tours from Dover Cruise port to Dover cliffs, Canterbury and Leeds castle. I can't find anything that goes from the cruise port everything is out of London. Thanks Sunny
Rare John Bull Posted February 19, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 19, 2017 Like the UK's other turnaround ports, lots of folk travel through but the town isn't a tourist centre - so excursions from Dover are mainly for the locals. Here's an example of what you'll find http://www.crosskeys.uk.com/coach-hire-day-trips-kent.shtml (no dates are quoted but these are occasional trips, not daily trips) White Cliff Tours offer local tours by van and/or boat, but their website is currently disabled. Grief with their web facilitator? Gone out of business? But no worries. Public transport in the UK is widely used, tolerably frequent, fast and economical. Direct half-hourly trains from Dover to Canterbury cost £8.50 round-trip & take under 30 minutes. Leeds Castle is a little more difficult - this involves a half-hour train journey to Maidstone, then 5 miles by local bus or taxi. Hourly train service, journey time just over an hour, round-trip tickets just under £20 http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Dover's castle is well worth a pretty full day, doesn't require a tour & is just a short bus or taxi ride from the town - but uphill, so not an easy walk. If you're concerned about taking public transport, or if you just want to be joined for the day by a friendly local face contact White Cliff Greeters, a local volunteer group http://www.whitecliffscountry.org.uk/See-Do/Attractions/Tours/White-Cliffs-Greeters.aspx JB :)
Bob++ Posted February 19, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 19, 2017 Take the train to Canterbury and then a taxi to Leeds Castle <£20 fare each way. Be sure to arrange the return with the driver as there will be no taxis at the castle. Dover Castle is a very well presented site and well worth a visit. cokersouth Posted February 20, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted February 20, 2017 Thanks both of you the information. I will look at these options. Sunny
DrivesLikeMario Posted February 23, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2017 1. There are some tours on Viator. 2. Also try https://www.internationalfriends.co.uk/search_tour.php They have tours from Dover. I've used International Friends before from Southampton and they do an excellent job! 3. The last time I was in England, we did a tour to Canterbury, Leeds, Greenwich and Dover: https://www.goldentours.com/leeds-castle-canterbury-dover-greenwich-river-boat-ride It was an excellent tour although we didn't get much time in Greenwich due to it getting dark so early in the winter time. It's definitely the easiest, most relaxing way to see these sites.
Bob++ Posted February 23, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2017 I think Driveslikemario is confused there. Those companies operate out of London. As JB said, there is no great demand for tours for cruisers from Dover.
