Free first Sunday museum admissions

I will be in Florence on the first Sunday in May. Can anyone confirm if the free museum admission is for everyone or just Italian citizens. I've found conflicting (and possibly outdated) information as I've been searching.

 

Also, has anyone been in Florence on one of these days? How busy was it?

We went to the Uffizi on free Sunday. We got there early and waited in line for an hour or so. It was crowded but we were still able to see the what we wanted.

If you can get to Florence early, you might be able to get into your museum of choice. If not, there are plenty of other sights and things to see and do. And yes, museums are free for everyone on the 1st Sunday of the month.

The bad thing about free days is the pickpockets get in free too!

I think I figured out the source of my confusion...looks like while the State museums are free to everyone, a few years ago Florence decided to only allow free admission to Florence residents for their City run museums (like Palazzo Vecchio).
