If this is true confessions I will come clean: I post of 2 other Cruise boards and about 3 Vegas boards, plus an occassional one here and there. Now I have to say my prayers and ask the Gods of these boards to forgive me for my adulterous ways. Also forgive my spelling. NMNita

I first discovered message boards around ten years ago while doing research about Alzheimer's Disease for a family member. At that time, I learned that that their greatest asset is also the cause of their biggest problems. Since people from all over the world have access to them, they provide a unique opportunity to share specialized knowledge that one might not know otherwise.. At the same time, there are a significant number of people who post erroneous "facts" on them , as well as businesses who utilize message boards as a marketing tool since they provide a target population of people who could use their services. However, in spite of these potential problems, message boards can be a great source of information for cruising, as well as anything else, as long as the reader is sophisticated enough to distinguish between helpful posts, posts with erroneous "facts", and businesses who use them as a marketing tool.

Can you post some good Vegas boards? We're going to Vegas in March and I would love to learn more about it.

Thanks!

Also, where's the best place to stay in Vegas?

Favorite website: LasVegastalk: followed by LasVegas Message forum and LasVegas advisor. There are several more and all will give you the same type of info we get on CC but about Vegas of course. Where to stay? wow, that's like what ship to cruise. It depends on what you want. March will still be a little on the cold side so most likely the pool area will not be all that important. The strip versus downtown, to rent a car or not, all these things play a part in any decision: Here is my opinion and mine only:

Not expensive, fun, lower gambling limits and able to walk all over: downtown, either the Golden Nugget (by far the class of downtown) second Fitzgeralds, not anything special, but not expensive and very friendly.

As for the strip, which is where you will probably want to stay: mid priced and very nice the Mirage or Paris, both are mid strip location so you can walk to several other locations. I would lean toward Paris. Less expensive with just so so rooms, but certainly clean, Ballys or Flamingo. Flamingo has awesome gardens you will want to see even if you stay somehere else. If you are looking for upscale Bellagios or Venetian are the places to stay. Mandalay Bay is popular but the location isn't that great and I found the staff to be very snotty!! Places not to even think about: Circus/Circus and Imperial Palace; bad!!! There is one positive thing about Circus/Circus, they have one, if not the best Sunday brunch in town. It is part buffet style and part order. You start with the typical buffet choices but not quite as elaborate as far as selection. As for taste, outstanding. After you have all of that you want your wait person will offer you a choice of steak, Prime Rib, lamb chops, chicken or Salmon. Two years ago they had Halibut as well.

Hope this helps some. NMnita

Also, where's the best place to stay in Vegas?

I have stayed many places in vegas, we always rent a car because you can drive from casino to casino, and parking is free. My favorite place to stay is the Rio all suite hotel.

There is always something going on at the Rio, if you don;t stay there make sure you visit. They have a great show every half hour over top of the casino. It is very cool. Also, Rio runs shuttles to the strip every 15 minutes and Harrahs runs shuttles to rio. It is my personal favorite.

Enjoy yourself when you go. It is a great town. Make sure you see at least one of the Cirque shows.

Oh yeah and I cheat as well. Another cruise message board and I found a very iteresting board after Hurricane Katrina, it was posted by the Mississippi Sun, some very interesting things going on at that board, and it also gave you a much better perspective of damaging effects of the storm.

I think Rio is a love/hate resort. I for one think the prices are way overpriced for the location: many others think the quality of food has hit bottom lately but then there are so many others that share your views. As for car rental I agree. We always have a car and use valet parking. It is the only way to do Vegas unless you stay downtown and are only going to be there for a couple of days. NMnita

When we met my IL's this summer, we stayed at Bally's. It was our first visit to Vegas. We did get all the player's cards walking up and down the strip and get specials via email and mail all the time now. Considering it is a 5.5 hour drive, there have been some that is tempting. That being said, we walked down to the Tuscany based on a recommendation from a member of another board I frequent. Oh yes, I cheat, I run my own for stay at home parents nationwide and a local one in my home town. I also have about 10 or so I visit. Back to the Tuscany, http://www.tuscanylasvegas.com/ We REALLY liked this hotel. We found the table minimums to be far less than the strip resorts and we did a tour of a couple of the rooms. For the price, we found it something we would like to stay at the next time we are in LV. It is just off the strip down from Bally's. We walked one night but we could have easily driven.

good to know the min are less. We like downtown for that reason as well as Sahara and Casino Royale. I have only been in Tuscany once, our last trip. DD, GDs and I stopped in for lunch in the mexican restaurant. Not a good thing to do, but the hotel looked really nice and there were lots of penny and nickel slots. NMnita

Ah yes, the Mexican restaurant. Not a good idea. We had gone to http://www.tillerman.com/ but it was closed for lunch. So we were getting hungry.

Walking back and forth between Bally's and Paris where my IL's were staying we noticed the table minimum's in both hotels going higher and higher throughout the day.

How we got on this subject I am not sure, but living in NM we can drive to the gambling meca a few times a year: We have started doing more in Laughin and less in Vegas cause of the min bets. For me, a slot player it isn't a big issue, but for my other half who is married to the crap table it's a big deal. NMNita

I love Laughlin, we were thinking that the next trip to Vegas we would do two nights in Laughlin and three in Vegas. We have to do Laughin first because there is no airline that flies into there to Phila.
