mississauga Posted June 28, 2017 #1 Share Posted June 28, 2017 I keep reading about the Malecon. Does it start from outside the port area? Can you just walk along it to get to the beaches? Is there anything to see walking along the malecon?
haply Posted June 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted June 28, 2017 It does not start outside the port area, and you have to take the $3 shuttle at the end of the port area (or grab a taxi right outside the gates of the port area). It is only about a 5-minute drive (not able to walk to in my opinion as on a busy highway, not a scenic walk). Once you get there, the Malecon is very walkable. There are many beach clubs/beach bars all along the walkway. The shuttle has four stops, but you can get off and walk up and down and see which club/spot looks the best to you. We have done Pez Quadro (at the end and pretty quiet), and the Krazy Lobster, which we are going to again this year.
Rare crewsweeper Posted June 28, 2017 #3 Share Posted June 28, 2017 See the link in my signature for a map and pictures . Be advised that some of the clubs have changed hands or are under new names. And there is a new club Pitaya along the malecon. They have a website. But, yes you can walk to the malecon. Partially along the beach but mostly along a roadway to the lighthouse where the paved malecon starts. However, you do need to exit the cruise port and then turn left and follow the road. There is/was a pathway down to the beach a short ways down. There is a lot of construction going on and that route may not be open or easily accessible anymore. Alternatively, you can walk the taxi route through Neuvo Mahahual to the highway and then down to the lighthouse. Depending on the time of the year, though it could be a very hot walk. With taxis so inexpensive, no reason not to travel in comfort.
