Taxi to Altun Ha

We have 9 in our party doing a Carnival Breeze cruise. Looking at different tour companies the cheapest we saw for a tour to Altun Ha is $40/person. Can we do better with a taxi to Altun Ha? If so do we have to leave the secure area to look for a taxi? Any other information about getting a taxi in Belize City is appreciated.

Well you technically could take a taxi. They are readily available right outside the cruise port terminal. However, as to fares, you'll need to discuss and agree to that with the driver BEFORE getting into the taxi. You need to be sure the taxi you are using has GREEN plates and is clearly marked. You'll have to negotiate waiting time (60-90) minutes and at the ruins outside of the small museum at the parking lot, you'll be strictly on your own or need to hire a guide there to tell you what you are looking at and give you some history. So, $40 pp is reasonable for a vendor who will supply you with all of this. What's the fare estimate? I don't know. It's around $US25 to the airport one way (cab, not per person) and that's under1/2 way to Altun Ha.

And BTW, the area directly outside the terminal gates is filled with other cruisers, vendors and taxis. So it's not "mugging" country.

Altun Ha is located 31 miles north of Belize City on the Old Northern Highway. A two-mile dirt road connects the main road to the site.

Fees you would pay on your own

Belizeans: BZD $5.00

Non-Belizeans: BZD$10.00

Thanks WTG....

That'd work out to under $50 for 9 people, entry fee for the OP's group..

Any idea on the taxi fare?
