World Traveller 2008 Posted November 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 7, 2017 On our last visit to Antigua, we weren't given enough time on our tour to explore Nelson's Dockyard. We visit in February with P&O Azura and would like to get a taxi there and back. Wouldtaxi driver wait whilst we explore Nelson's Dockyard or would it be too expensive. How easy would it be to get a taxi back to the ship? Any advice would be appreciated.
leahsdad Posted November 8, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2017 Nelsons is at the end of a bus line from St. Johns---bus #17---the bus terminal is a 10 minute walk from the port----it is $3 per person each way-----Nelsons I believe was $8 per person-----the bus stop is right in front of the ticket area at Nelsons taxi would be quite expensive----we have done this and the people are quite friendly Paul
Rare Hlitner Posted November 9, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 9, 2017 You can certainly hire a taxi for the day (or part of the day) and negotiate a price. In that case, they will wait. There are not normally taxis just sitting around Nelson;s Dockyard looking for fares although I guess you could have somebody in a cafe or shop call for a taxi. Like the previous poster, we have often used the local buses (and walked to the St Johns bus station from the port) to get to various beaches and places around the island. The buses are the primary transportation for many islanders and not aimed specifically at tourists. But the drivers are pretty friendly (as are many of the islanders who you might meet on the bus/vans). If you do not mind being crammed into a tight mini-bus they are a good and cheap way to get around the island...including over to Nelson's Dockyard.
