snorkeling at turtle farm

On the Star in Jan. GC from noon to 7. planning on public bus to turtle farm and wondering if any one has snorkeled here. I have read on some of the GC sites that the small cove and nearby reef are very good, although it is just rock stair entrance. I'm afraid tender delays may make it necessary to combine activities to one destination, and looking forward to seeing turtle farm instead of cows in Ia.

The Cracked Conch restaurant is across the street from the turtle farm. Directly behind the restaurant is where you can snorkel. There is also a dive shop there, Dive Tech, where you can rent gear if you need it ($7.50 for mask/fins/snorkel); it is also a good place for shore dives. I had friends that dove there and said it was really good, reef is shallow enough for snorkelers too. If some people don't want to snorkel, you can sit and just grab a drink from the Cracked Conch. The view from the open back deck is fabulous. Don't know if its still there since Ivan, but they did have a covered deck right down next to where you enter the water.

The Turtle FARM is just that, a farm where turtles are raise as a product. Sure, they release some of them into the ocean, but the majority are, how shall I put this.... The same thing happens to the turtles at the turtle farm as happens to pigs on a pig farm, it just doesn't smell as bad as a pig farm. Some people enjoy their trip there, other do not. Cruisnqt's kids liked it as told in this post I think it is best to know what to expect before you go.

As to the snorkeling site near there, cruisin*tigger got it right. It is free to snorkel there. The shoreline is all rock (called Ironshore for a reason, wear booties), just as it is at all the good snorkeling sites. http://www.divetech.com is the nearby dive shop.
