Going to the beach from Livorno

On our cruise in June, we would like to have one beach day. Livorno is the best day for your schedule. It looks like Elba or Viareggio might be a good choice. Has anyone gone to either from Livorno? Or do you have other suggestions?

We rented a car at the port and drove to Viareggio for the day. It was a great beach day .

Viareggio is the largest beach in the area. It's very corporate, for lack of a better word. There are beach clubs lining the waterfront where you rent chairs, etc. It's relatively easy to get to by train.

 

A little off the beaten path would be a ferry to Elba. The crossing takes an hour on the car ferries or 40 minutes on the high speed passenger ones. There are regular ferries on the route though only a few of the high speed ones.
