CruiseMark Posted December 26, 2005 #1 Share Posted December 26, 2005 This was a replacement port for us from our originally scheduled Cozumel, but it turned out to be the highlight of the cruise for me. We have arranged a private tour with Davide and Ivan at Native Choice to the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. Our tour was led by Davide (pronounced DAH-vee-day). Both he and Ivan are Mayan and grew up amongst the ruins. Davide’s knowledge of the history, plant life, culture and mythology of the Mayan’s is amazing. He really made the ruins come alive with his stories. Logistical highlights included a nice 50 minute ride to the ruins in a newer air-conditioned van, free soda’s and water, etc. Highly, highly recommended. If you only stay in the port area of Costa Maya, you’ve missed out on a wonderful experience. Davide mentioned that they're close to finalizing negotiations to pick up for their tours directly at the port. As it was, we just found the taxi stand, bought our tickets, then took a rickety bus into town. There was a rep from Native Choice right where they drop you off in Mahahual (the Cat's Meow restaurant is right there too, where they tell you to meet). At the end of the tour, Daive dropped us off right at the port at our request (he would have dropped us in town if we wanted). As I said, highly recommended!
