RCCL DIY Rome Excursion

Recommended Posts

We have been to Rome before and on our October Symphony cruise I cannot find anyone to share private transfers from Civitavecchia. RCCL offers two of their excursions......Private Transfer by Roma Express (train) and Passage to Rome (bus). Both offer transfers only to St. Peter's; both around the same $; both around 9 hours total........any preference of these two?

Why not try doing the train on your own. It is fairly easy. Purchase the BIRG ticket from one of the tobacco shops (sometimes there's vendors there waiting to sell them to you.) on your way to the train station at Civitavecchia. With the BIRG ticket, you'll also have access to the subway in Rome. (Don't forget to validate your ticket before boarding the train.)

And since you've been to Rome before, you know that many sights are within walking distance....some random thoughts:

* From the St. Peter train station, simply look up and you'll see the dome of St. Peter's Basilica...walk towards the dome...this can be your first stop.

* Next, walk towards the Tiber River and visit the Castle D' Angelo...about a 10 minute walk.

* Next, walk across the Tiber River and to Piazza Navona (this was the site of ancient Chariot races)...about a 15 minute walk.

* Next, follow the signs (look up on the buildings at the corner) and walk to the Pantheon...about a 10 minute walk.

* Next, follow the signs again and walk to the Trevi Fountain...another 10 minute walk.

From here, (and if you are tired of walking) take the subway to the Colosseum and the rest of the sights you'd like to visit....oh, Spanish Steps would be nice as well.

You can use the BIRG ticket on your way back to Civitavecchia. Please give yourself plenty of time to get back to your ship. Have a great day in Rome and Happy Sailing!
