hamp123 Posted April 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2018 hi thinking on booking our 1st cruise and unsure of dress code do we have to dress up every night for dinner??? are there restaurants where shorts are acceptable ( for men or women) or is this a no no?? thanks for any replies
WeeCountyMan Posted April 13, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Shorts are not acceptable in the MDR for dinner - OK at breakfast though. You'll need to use the buffet in the evening if you want to wear shorts - places are dressed with tablecloths and set out cutlery and flowers etc. For the MDR on informal nights it's smart casual for gents - long trousers and shirt, or polo neck, long or short sleeve, ties not required. Ladies as appropriate.
Sarah888 Posted April 13, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 13, 2018 (edited) Just to add to the dress code - having an 18 year old son can i ask if black jeans would be acceptable, with a smart casual top in the either the buffet or MDR on the Marella Discovery (he will be dressing up on the dress to impress night though) Thank you Edited April 13, 2018 by Sarah888 Spelling
Pensioncruiser Posted April 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2018 That would be fine in the self service restaurant and probably OK in the MDR just depends who's on the door you should not have a problem but will just be asked to change we have only seen a refusal a couple of times one being for wearing sandals without sock's?? Rare Jim The Scot Posted April 13, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Your son should have no issues wearing black jeans in MDR on Discovery.Saw all forms of dress code in MDR from dressed to the nines to jeans and t- shirt Besides if you have a wee look at the latest brochure swapping trousers for smart tailored shorts is acceptable

Ladies as appropriate. Apparently 'smart tailored shorts' are now acceptable in the MDRs on Discovery, D2 and Explorer. This is from the Marella FAQs page:- Is there a dress code on board? Our dress code policy’s easily broken down into Beachwear, Casual and Smart. Beachwear is a ‘come as you are’ affair, so bikinis and trunks get the thumbs up, plus we ask that you wear something on your feet for safety reasons. Casual speaks for itself – we’re talking tops and shorts or a sundress. Sandals and flip-flops are allowed. Smart is a chance for everyone to dress up. Men will need to wear long trousers, a shirt or polo shirt, and closed shoes. If you’re onboard Marella Discovery, Marella Discovery 2 or Marella Explorer, you can swap long trousers for smart, tailored shorts. If you want to add a jacket or tie, that’s up to you. WeeCountyMan Posted April 14, 2018 #8 Share Posted April 14, 2018 Apparently 'smart tailored shorts' are now acc development, thanks.eptable in the MDRs on Discovery, D2 and Explorer. This is from the Marella FAQs page:- Interesting development, thanks. Even more so because it is not universally applicable to all TUI ships. Shorts in the MDR for dinner - not for me, I am all for informality, however, there are limits.
