Roscoe13 Posted January 4, 2006 #26 Share Posted January 4, 2006 I have seen sharks too. Hammerheads in the Caribbean and a more non-descript variety in the Pacific.
palmtre2 Posted January 4, 2006 #27 Share Posted January 4, 2006 We always bring a small pair of powerful binoculars - I love looking at out islands and marine life. While DH & DD were taking a nap (really they were watching "Jaws" for the 80th time) I was out on the balcony and caught a whale breaching in the distance. I also love watching the light shows from far off thunder storms.
Indyjones Posted January 4, 2006 #28 Share Posted January 4, 2006 I am looking forward to seeing a hairy dolphin going down the water slide on the Miracle this March and flying through the air like a flying fish and hitting the deck like a greased pig. :D

cruisinjules Posted January 4, 2006 Author #30 Share Posted January 4, 2006 Oh man, now I am really excited. I thought for sure marine life sighting were rare and fleeting, but it sounds like my odds of seeing something entertaining are pretty good! YAY! 31 days till my Miracle Voyage! Stevie17 Posted January 4, 2006 #31 Share Posted January 4, 2006 Count me in as one who has seen flying fish on every cruise so far. I love watching them glide across the surface of the water. I've yet to see a dolphin...maybe this time?
beaming90 Posted January 4, 2006 #32 Share Posted January 4, 2006 Hi! I know this is a stupid :o question, but I know nothing about whales. Is there a chance to see them on an Eastern Carribean cruise? Or are they only in colder areas? Thanks!
jcs56 Posted January 4, 2006 #33 Share Posted January 4, 2006 On the Thanksgiving cruise on the Victory (Western) we saw tons of dophins all at once. We watched them for about 30 minutes or more off our balcony. It was awesome....it was the late afternoon before Costa Maya the next morning. Another day we fed some very large black fish off the side of the ship. Don't know what they were but they liked to eat!!
Steamboatin Posted January 4, 2006 #34 Share Posted January 4, 2006 Cruising in and out of New Orleans from the Head of the Passes where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico you can see for several hours the oil rig platforms lighted up at night. The vessel comes within a few miles of some and some are varying distances to the horizon. Many times clustered in groups. Most counted one night was up in the 40's. Do not remember exact number now. Extremely interesting to see them working at night. Sometimes you may see one flaring off (burning) excess gas and that is beautiful to watch at night also. Kittybork Posted January 5, 2006 #37 Share Posted January 5, 2006 We saw oodles of flying fish in December. BF spent a great deal of time trying to get pictures of them. Thank goodness they were digital because if we'd had to pay to get them developed, it would have been a fortune. After all of that, he got one pic of the fish. You have to use a bit of imagination to really see it, but it's there!
emerald777 Posted January 5, 2006 #38 Share Posted January 5, 2006 Saw flying fish and a couple dolphins on our last cruise. It was soooo cool! This was my 7th cruise and 1st time to actually see anything and then only because someone else pointed out the flying fish from the windjammer. If you want to increase your chances of seeing something, be towards the front of the ship, that seemed to be where the large majority of flying fish came from. Saw 2 dolphins just kind of sitting on top of the water watching the ship go past while watching the flying fish. Also, watch from the Promenade deck since it's closer to the water and those flying fish are tiny!
Foo7595 Posted January 5, 2006 #39 Share Posted January 5, 2006 A VERY large shark was spotted ( by me) from cabin #7400 - Carnival Triumph - in February 2003, on our way to Cozumel. The strange thing about it was that the shark seemed to be just kinda riding the wake very close to the side of the ship and very near the surface of the water. Here we are in the middle of the ocean - and I just so happen to spot him while I'm having coffee on my balcony! Amazing sight to see!

BonnieSte Posted January 11, 2006 #42 Share Posted January 11, 2006 We have breakfast and coffee every morning on our balconies and yes, flying fish, dolphins and once a whale. But mostly in the Southern Carribean. Watching the islands as you leave is also a huge plus. A drink at night. can't ask for more. Life is good! cruisin newbie Posted January 11, 2006 #43 Share Posted January 11, 2006 We had an aft balcony in November and saw no marine life from the ship. We did hear someone talking at the pool who had spotted the flying fish earlier that day. Maybe next time!
idocdlw Posted January 11, 2006 #44 Share Posted January 11, 2006 LOve to watch the flying fish, I think they are just too cool. Funniest thing we saw from our balcony in Cozumel were two young guys on a Princess ship mooning all us Carnival people--it went on for quite a while. Great...just great... ...another rule I have to add to my child's "Cruise Rules" pre-cruise brief...NO MOONING!
loves2Travel68 Posted January 11, 2006 #45 Share Posted January 11, 2006 I've seen flying fish. It was on the Destiny one of the "fun days at sea" I was sitting in a chair near the windows near the casino and noticed something in the water, looked a bit harder, and yes, it was like we were going through a school of flying fish. Really cool. Looking forward to spying more marine life on my cruise next month.
Arwenmark Posted January 11, 2006 #46 Share Posted January 11, 2006 I have seen flying fish on every cruise I have been on, also have seen dolphins on several and a shark on one and many electric jelly fish which at night can freak the Heck out of you. Also saw the most incredible Fully Masted Tall ship Man was that thing impressive in full sail. also an albatross.
beaming90 Posted January 11, 2006 #47 Share Posted January 11, 2006 I just can't wait to see marine life! On our first cruise we passed another ship during the middle of the night. It was quite a ways away, but seeing it all lit up in the dark ocean was a sight to see!
crsinmo Posted March 14, 2006 #48 Share Posted March 14, 2006 We were on the Conquest last week, March 5th sailing. We saw lots of flying fish! Almost ever day, all time of the day. The place we found to look is on the sides just as the wake ends. Sometimes there were one or two, sometimes 10 or more. We also saw 3 dolphins on Monday morning. They swam along side the ship for a short time, jumping out of the water as they swam.
jw4jg1mg2eg1 Posted March 14, 2006 #49 Share Posted March 14, 2006 I can't remember now if it was at the pier of pre-hurricane Cozumel or in Progresso, but when we docked, we saw a BUNCH of small stingray. We also saw alot of dolphins playing around close to one of those pier. I never looked for flying fish...LOL..never knew there was one..I'll have to do some looking for those this time.:D
mrsv41605 Posted March 14, 2006 #50 Share Posted March 14, 2006 We saw flying fish, dophins, and whales several times while at sea last April. We saw one small sea turtle while snorkling. The flying fish are a trip--I thought they were regular birds, and kept watching the water for them to resurface. Weird, very cool. The dolphins seemed to be "escorting" the ship. The were swimming along the side right up near the front. The whales were always pretty far off--we saw one jump, then smash his tail, then his spout. We were also mooned by Princess passengers while docked at San Juan.
