Hello Everyone,

We are going to be in Havana on Monday 02JUL via RCCL MOS.

Can anyone confirm if the Almacenes San Jose market open on Mondays?

If they are not open, can anyone recommend another place to shop for art and souvenirs?

We are looking to buy paintings, hand made crafts, and rum. We do not want made in china junk.

Thanks in advance.

Are they open the rest of the week?

Yes...but they are closed right now due to a fire. I am not sure when they are going to open. People that have returned said a month...that was a couple of weeks ago. The guides have been taking the tourist to other places to shop. Hope that helps a little.

Most of the tourist shops have paintings of the classic cars. Try along Calle Obispo. If you are looking for quality art, though, you may have to arrange to go to an artist's studio or look for the couple of print making studios in Havana Vieja. There are also a couple of high end craft shops in Vieja. Otherwise, there is mostly junk, including most paintings at the Almacenes San Jose (IMO). Other souvenirs and crafts are largely not high quality.

In the end of June, our tour guide told us that it will not open till at least a month. They had an alternate shopping stop for those who wanted to shop. This was within walking distance to the port, towards the right (backing the ship). We did not get off there and opted to do the walking tour of the plazas with the guide. HAL informed us a day ahead that the San Jose market was closed due to a fire and they will try to accommodate another one.

Very true, just walk around Obispo and you will find many sounvenirs. There is a few markets by the fort and a bigger on the same street as the to the Ice Cream place Coppelia. Just a few blocks down called Mercado de Artesanons de Rampa we bought a few paintings there and some tall wooden statues.
