Independent off ship tour question

Travelling QM2 Eastbound LA - NY March 06 ........ Cunard has advised that Iguazu Falls excursion sold out before we even got the tour book!!!!!!

 

My TA has suggested that we arrange a trip ourselves flying from Montevideo - Igauzu (via BA)and staying 2 nights then flying to Rio(again via BA) to catch up with the ship.

 

Has anyone done this sort of trip before??

 

Is this practice acceptable to Cunard??? (obviously they would have to be informed of our absence from the ship)

 

We don't like the thought of going halfway around the world then missing the best sights, so will consider almost anything.
