Where we live, there really is no place to wear formal wear. So a cruise gives us that opportunity and we usually take it. We've found if it's a cruise that's less than 7 nights, it's easier just to take the suite and something a little less formal than a cocktail dress.

I convinced my husband to buy a tux before our last cruise but 1.

Best investment we ever made. He looks so good in a tux and I get all dressed up too. We also got all dressed up this past New Year's and had a blast; we just went to a party a friend was having but boy did we get the compliements.

I do admit that it is a bit of a pain to pack but then so are my gowns and high heels.

One thing make sure that you get a tux that fits! I think my husband thought a tux would be uncomfortable based on his experiences with yucky prom tux rentals.

If you rent or buy make sure that it a fits correctly. A well fitted tux is comfortable and shouldn't choke or bind you.

Good luck!

Depends on you. If you will be more comfortable in a nice looking dark suit, so be it. If you really like to get into the "specialness" of the occasion, then a tux is the way to go. I use the onboard rental service and find the convenience to be well worth any minor fitting discomfort.

Personally, I prefer to wear a black suit, but it helps that DW is not a big fan of the whole dress & heels thing. We "dress" for dinner, but soon afterwards its back to something casual to finish out the night. We may live on the Vineyard, but we don't exactly hang with the cocktail party crowd.

I prefer the tux, although it can be a pain acquiring one. Luckily, my brother bought a tux and it happens to fit me perfectly. So, I've commandeered it.

During past cruises I've worn a suit and was just fine with it. However, I did wish I had a tux because they look so cool while on a ship.

Some people despise dressing up, but I see it as paying respect to the captain, crew and fellow passengers to look your best.

Here's a link that makes a good point IMO:

My wife & I hve cruised 12 times & love to dress up.

On our last cruise last October on Rhapsody a lot of crew members thanked & complemented us.

It is nice to see people dress formaly when ever possible.

As you can see I am the good looking one on the left.:D

All joking aside, WHAT EVER YOU DO HAVE A GREAT TRIP.

DH usually rents a tux, but will be purchasing one this year. He’s in his brother’s wedding, and his brother wants basic black tuxes. DH will buy his, and the rental will be chosen based on what he buys. For less than the cost of two rentals, he will own his own.

Like others have said, we don’t often get the chance to dress up at home, and really enjoy it on a cruise.

My DH definitely prefers wearing a tux on formal nights...he owns one, but never brings it, always rents one, so he doesn't have carry in luggage, nor has to iron his shirts. So he always rents from the cruiseline.

I took my Navy Dinner Dress Blues as well as two suits on my first cruise (9 nighter). Wore all three. For the record, I bought a tux recently and plan to take it with me on all cruises from now on. I'm also going to bring Mess Dress Blue or White from now on. I personally love the opportunity to dress up, and agree that it pays respect to the crew and Captain, as well as all the people you are eating with. You can't help but be on your best behavior when you're dressing the part in my opinion. Hope this helps.

I wore a tux for both formal nights on the only cruise we took, so far. It was nice wearing it to dinner, too bad the food didn't match the occassion (HAL), but there's something very cool about going to the casino in a tux and having some late night drinks around a piano bar drinking port or cognac.

Besides, the best part about wearing a tux, is having taken off, wink wink

We just bought DH a tux for formal nights. He has worn a black 3-piece suit to all other formal nights just because he didn't own a tux.

Get this, his ENTIRE tux (including shoes, tie, jacket, shirt, and pants) was less than $70. A local tux shop went out of business and sold off their rental tuxes for DIRT CHEAP! :) Class for less!

One of the few things that looks better than a man in a well fitting tux, is a man in dress uniform.

Thank you for your service to our country.

  • 3 weeks later...

Depending on the situation - sometimes my DH brings a nice dark suit....other times he will rent a tux from the cruiseline. He ALWAYS goes the suit route when we cruise on Carnival. We find FAR less tuxedos on Carnival than anywhere else...and he feels overdressed.

Next month on the EOS he's going to rent a tux. We're spending the following week in Orlando, and it will save room in our suitcases...not to mention he'd have to get it pressed as soon as we arrived on the ship. Which is always a hassle.
