Juliadlf Posted January 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2006 Is trying to see both the Grand Palace and Monplaisir Palace when visiting Peterhof too much? The tour also talks about walking the Lower Park. Anyone have experience visiting the department store Passage and the grocery store Eliseev? Worth the time or do without in your opinion? Thanks everyone. Julia
johnlcd Posted January 18, 2006 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2006 Dear Julia It shouldn't be too much to see both. As Monplaisir is situated to the left of the lower park, you will walk that area anyway. Both Passage and Eliseev are historic venues and should for this reason alone be seen, however, both are just a shadow of their former years. Eliseev is simply a one storey grocers shop,(albeit ornately decorated) where you can buy anything from delicatessen to vodka to chocolate. Passage on the other hand is a narrow glass domed "mall" recently modernized and features mostly designer touristy shops. In my opinion there are better things to be seen. John Have you seen them after they were retored? Eliseev's is one of the most spectacular examples of Style Moderne design in the world. To say it is simply a grocery store is doing a disservice in describing it.
johnlcd Posted January 28, 2006 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2006 Sorry! I'm not an aficionado of architecture. I just call it as I see it. John
