What is a good hotel to stay at. We arrive about 1:00 am and need a good place to stay  for one night but not crazy expensive. We are already booked Residence Inn Downtown for the following night (decided to fly in extra day early) and Residence is already sold out.

You have a choice of staying close to the airport, or heading downtown.

Close to the airport, we normally use the Coast Vancouver Airport and while we never book hotels downtown, the YWCA has reasonable rates.

If you have to change hotels after you wake up anyway, you may as well get the cheapest hotel you can find with decent ratings on Tripadvisor/Expedia etc. If the YWCA is available, it's your best bet (minimal hassle moving yourselves and your stuff to the other hotel - though if the Y is available on both nights cancelling the Residence would save you even more cash while putting you in an even better-rated hotel). If the Y is already sold out, then probably an airport hotel will be the next-best deal - can't recommend any of those personally as have never needed to stay in one.

If staying at an airport hotel, the most cost effective way downtown would be catching the hotel shuttle back to the airport, then catching Skytrain downtown. Yaletown Station is about 10 min walk to hotel.

Easiest is getting a taxi from hotel to hotel. However, if you return to the airport by hotel shuttle you will get taxis at the airport at a fixed price - probably $32.00
