Dubrovnik, Koper, Split, Kotor

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just looking for tips for trips and what to do at these port of calls, prefer to do are own thing usually rather than guided tours but if there's any must see places would like to know.

I have been told there's are cable cars in Dubrovnik offering fsntastic views. I don't how far these are from the port?

Koper - we fancied a trip 'Caves & Castles' ... Postojna Caves  and then onto Predjama Castle ????

Split, I beleive the port is right on the doorstep of the main town, so we could go our own way and potter around for the day - whats a must see here?

Koto,r not too sure about the port  and what the best options and must see things? I have been told there are some great views as you sail in down the Gulf of Kotor though.

Any tips would be really welcome, nothing worse than getting back on the ship & realising you missed on out something 🙂

Dubrovnik - you can take a taxi tour right from the pier which takes you to some amazing views points and to the top of the cable cars. Then have them drop you off at the walls.

Kotor - the town is adorable and easily walkable. We did a tour in order to get off the ship quickly (as it was a tender port) but at the port there were lots of taxis offering site seeing tours which all looked really nice.

Split - yes, you can walk right into the town from the port (maybe 15 minute walk) which was nice. We did a tour of Trogir which was beautiful.

Thanks for info, logistically how does Dubrovnik  work? - A few have recommedned the taxi tour, are the walls located high up and would we be able to get the cable car back down afterwards as we're quite partial to a cabler car ride withsatunning views 🙂

The Dubrovnik walls   surround the town that is by the sea. The cable car will take you to a modern restaurant (good for a cool drink) and we have never had an issue in going back down.   We walk the walls , explore some areas, and then go on the cable car

Dubrovnik

The cruise berths are about 2 miles from the walled city,, two main ways to do it ...........

1. Take a taxi from the ship to the top of Mt Srd. Super views at the top. Then cablecar down to just outside the walled city.

Local bus or ship's shuttlebus back to ship ("sorry, we seem to have lost our tickets" :classic_wink:)

(you can't do this in reverse, there are no taxis at the top)

2. Take ship's shuttle both ways, & up & down on the cablecar. Bus drop point is near Pille / Pila Gate.

Or local bus or taxi between ship & walled city.

In the city, walk the walls. Costs 200 kuna (local currency or card). You can walk all the way round, then reward yourselves with a long cold beer. Or you can chicken-out halfway round (but no re-admission). Well worth doing, but very little shade - if it's a hot day do it early.

And wander the streets & waterfront.

Split

It's a 5 to 15 minute (depends on your berth) waterside walk to the old city - main point of interest is the Diocletian's Palace.

Very compact & easy to DIY.

If ancient buildings aren't your scene, Bacvice beach is very good. From your ship a 10 - 15 minute walk over the headland & rail line

Dubrovnik:  Take a taxi or ship transfer to Pile Gate, the main entrance to the old city.  Walk the walls, find Cafe Buza Cafe- google it and you'll see why.

The cable car is easy to do on your own.  It's a short walk from the side city gate (not Pile Gate) ...  It's easy to spot...it's a cable car!  Spend as much time up top as you like. Great view!

Enjoy!!

it sounds like Dubrovnik is one of the places you really don't need an organized tour. basically get yourself to the gate of the walled city, explore it and the walls and then can cable car or taxi or even bus back? we're only there 8 to 5 so i don't think time for much more.

and if you did get a taxi, how would you pay? do you need to go to an atm asap? this is the only place (and maybe kotor) that won't take the euro. how much should you take out so you're not left holding a bunch or souvenir money?
