When you put it on a list like that, it really does sound like a lot. There are a number of items I would leave off, but everyone has their own list to follow, to suit their own personal needs. I try to keep my packing as simple as possible. I've found that too much is not only a lot to haul along, then haul home, it's too much to try to organize everything once onboard.

My list:

toiletries in travel sizes

makeup bag

a small first aid kit, with just a few remedies, plus bandaids

camera, with more film or memory than you think you need

clothes, shoes (as few pair as possible)

bathing suits and cover ups (at least 3 suits)

a large bottle of sunscreen, more than you think you will need

a hat

Before we leave we tweeze, wax, haircut, manicure pedicure and leave all that paraphernalia behind. We've found that we really never get to those postcards, so we leave address labels behind. If we are travelling with friends, we leave messages on the voicemail, leaving post its behind. We check our clothes and luggage for repair and leave the duct tape behind. If a suitcase broke, we'd probably ditch it and buy a new one, but we've yet to have that happen (crossing fingers!) My husbands bathing suit has an inner plastic lined pocket, so we leave the water wallet behind.

Since you have a computer, do a spreadsheet and fill in for your own personal needs. I just change ours to suit each individual trip. I also keep the carry on packed at all times, reading lists, there are so many little things to organize, it actually takes longer to pack than the clothes. I refill all products when we get home and all we have to add is makeup and the husbands shave kit before we walk out the door. This works well for us, as we take exactly the same items along in the carry on for an overnight as we do for a 2 week vacation.

I've searched the boards and can't find the packing list! Can someone send me one, or the link to it please! Thanks in advance.

Just type in "What to pack on a cruise?" and it will give you several web

sites to choose from.

Ask 100- people on these threads what you need for a cruise and you will get 100 ideas of what to pack.

Basic essentials are toiletries you use every day or can't live without and clothing for the duration of the cruise. If you plan to attend formal nights, then formal clothing should be inside your luggage.

Remember no matter what the cruiseline or ship you're on there are options for laundry and dry cleaning - many times at a cheaper price than you can get the same service at home.

If you take medications, make sure those medications are packed in your carry-on bags. Don't pack them in check-in luggage since there's no guarantee when your luggage will be delivered to your cabin.

When it comes to a cruise remember whatever you would take on a land vacation will be needed on a cruise, i.e. suntan lotion, clothes, ect. Don't forget your camera and enough film or batteries to get you through - which you would pack on a land vacation anyway, right?

Just sit down and think what you would normally require for a week (10 days or more depending on cruise duration) and then pack accordingly knowing you can downsize many of those things. (Carry travel size bottles of favorite shampoo or similar toiletries in your luggage.)

I have to add, the first cruise we took, I used a packing list like what you will find on these and other boards. Some of the stuff I bought is still in it's original container, 8 years later, never used.

If you have to ask what an item is being used for, you don't need it. Don't add anything extra to your daily toiletry regimen, you really won't want to take the time. Don't pack an empty bag in a bag, unless it folds down smaller than a wallet!

One tip I've read that I think is useful, for those who want to take a soft sided cooler for beach/pool times is to pack it with toiletries, use it onboard and repack what needs to go back home.

Toilet Paper?

Do they have "Crappy" toilet paper?

One more idea about packing:

I used to take along medications for the amount of days we would be away from home. Some of my family members were caught away from home during September 11th and ran out of their meds. (No flights were allowed for a number of days.) So I always pack at least another weeks worth of medications --- just in case!

Yes, in many cases a pharmacy will call your home pharmacy or doctors office so they can get enough meds to tide you over, however, it can be expensive, time consuming and generally a pain in the butt to have to do that. It's much better to plan ahead.

Have fun!

Glad you saw that because I missed it on first read.

There was a thread on this in the RCCL section not to long ago.

You should never bring your own paper.

The paper they use is designed to work with the toilets on the ships. Remember your toilet is in a line of 50 others that might have problems if the wrong kind is used.

And I once brought a duffle bag of all kinds of worthless stuff. you know.. just in case...:p

I remember reading the post over there also. I'd never even think of it, there's never any extra space in my suitcase for it anyway.

Lot's of good tips, but I need a tractor trailer as it is, can't add anymore without having to put a dinghy behind the ship to carry it all!

Thanks everyone for all your help with the various packing lists, both practical and amusing. I love the list that had the crock pot on it. I'm guessing that was to see if we were paying attention. Thanks again, lots of great help as usual.I especially like using the collapsible cooler for the toiletries, so as not to double up on bags, and save room !Kathy

;) Thank you, thank you , thank you Dr. Crash!!! That is the best list I have seen. It's very practical, except for the kitchen sink ( I've already packed that!!) You mentioned things that I hadn't thought of yet,and I'm sure I wouldn't have until I got there!! Thanks again, Kathy:cool:

Room Freshener, (absolutely, one for living area and a travel oust for bathroom)

Several Clothes Pins, (yep for swimsuits and scuba gear)

Downy Wrinkle Release, (didn't take and obviously didn't use)

Hangers, (yes)

Zip Lock Bags, (yes)

Small Flash Light, (bathroom is very dark at night, who wants to turn a bright light on?!)

Steamer (didn't need),

Sanitizer Wipes/Purell, (used a lot)

Sticky Notes, (yes)

Large Insulated Mug, (we bought big water bottles but didn't use them much)

duct Tape (didn't take, didn't need)

Binoculars, (yes)

Camera, Film, Extra Batteries, (yes)

Sun Glasses, (absolutely)

Sunscreen, (absolutely)

Medications in Original Containers, (yep)

Bonine or other Seasick Med, (took but didn't use, wouldn't be caught without it though)

Highlighter, (yep)

Small First Aid Items, (we took a small travel kit and used the heck out of the bandaids, feet not used to the summer shoes!)

Cold Meds. (used for allergies)

Over the door shoe holder (indespensible since there were 3 of us, it kept things nicely organized)
