I am still confused about the china visa.  can we use the 144 hour waiver if arrival shanghai from toronto and depart 15 from shanghai on ship to hong kong.

If you only have one mainland Chinese stop you are fine, Hong Kong Macau and Taiwan do not count as a Chinese stop.

Toronto - Shanghai - Hong Kong is allowed.

I assume you don't return to china.

 

You are actually allowed more than 144 hour as the clock starts ticking at midnight on the day of arrival.
