Aft Balconies - Spirit Class ships

We have been on balconies on Carnival ships but have read that many enjoy the balconies at the aft of the ship. I have two questions:

1. Are the balconies completely open to the sun - that is to say no shade at all?

2. Based on the staggered profile at the back of the ship, are the aft balconies open to the balconies or deck above them (fully or partially)?

Thanks for any comments or observations.

I recently cruised on the Legend and had aft cabin 7300.

1> The shade/sun on the aft cabins is dependent on which direction the ship is heading and the time of day (position of the sun). The balcony will have periods of shade and periods of sun.

2> If I remember correctly I could only see the person below who was standing at the rail. Ditto on the balcony above.

Exactly what is it that you want to do on the balcony that would concern you with what others might see? lol icon_confused.gificon_biggrin.gificon_wink.gificon_eek.gif

Thanks very much for the prompt replies and photos - they are just what I was looking for.

I asked about whether the aft balconies have any cover in case we wanted to sit out in the balcony but be in the shade. The balcony is great but we don't necessarily always want to be in the sun - especially in the first couple days so that we wouldn't risk sunburn.

I asked about whether the balconies were open to above as I read that on some Princess balconies everyone above them can see you and on some other aft balconies people complained about cups and cigarette butts falling down to their balconies.

Now I just have to decide whether to book an aft balcony or a balcony guarantee. Thanks again.

Hi Mark2, here's something for you to think about while you're trying to decide on booking balcony gty or just booking an aft. We booked a balcony gty and got upgraded to cabin 7300 (aft ext balcony) on the Pride. They ARE wonderful cabins and I didn't mean to make your decision harder to make. icon_biggrin.gif I just booked another balcony gty for the Spirit and although I'd loved to get another aft, we'll be happy with any balcony. Thanks for the tip.

I think we'll try the aft balcony next time to see what it is like. We have had side facing balconies, and we had a forward facing cabin (no balcony) on RCI Voyager so perhaps we'll move to the stern this time.

I suppose if there is too much sun on the balcony we can move inside or find shade on the Lido Deck.

Do we have enough here? Thank you Serene56. :D

Just to let everyone know that most of these photos are Cat. 11 Suites. I believe the cabins do not have a whirlpool tub.

I think the best 2 pictures to compare are

and

The 1st pciture is our cabin on the Pride room 4228 on the main deck. It was a wonderful cabin and the balcony was wonderful. However, with the large overhang, the sun was hit and miss. There was definitely more shade than sun. It was hilarious watching us follow the sun and schedule our day accordingly. The 2nd picture shows what our balcony will be like when we sail the Spirit in 01/2006. I opted for a higher deck and one where the balcony gets a lot more sunshine.

If you are looking at a cabin with a wrap around, you need to know that not every deck has a cabin with a separate bedroom. 4228 and 7298 do have the separate bedroom. I believe the remaining two decks do not. If you are interested in one of these cabins, the best way to check is by calling Carnival directly.

And yes, these cabins do have the whirlpool tub!

Deck 8 (Panorama) also has a separate bedroom. We were in cabin 8268 on the Pride last year (two-day Cruise to Nowhere), and we will be in the same cabin on the Miracle for Thanksgiving.

I read on another board that the corner aft cabins on Deck 5 were not much bigger than an ordinary balcony cabin, and should not even be considered a suite.

So, decks 4, 7 and 8 have the separate bedroom, and decks 5 and 6 do not?

Deck 4 balcony has the regular overhang, and decks 5 through 8 have the slant thing going on? Are the balconies all the same size, or are decks 5 through 8 shorter due to the rail slant?

And Kathy, is the only reason you moved up is so you can get some sun?

Most definitely!!!! But also I hoped that with a cabin a little bit further away from the engine, there would not be as much noise and vibration as we had on deck 4. This was only a problem until we were south of Cabo.
