New Statendam Canada, New England, Greenland & Iceland

We are looking at the 24 day August 3 - 27, 2022 cruise and really like the itinerary and the fact that it is round trip Boston. 

 

I have read the HAL port information and sample excursions for this cruise and am wondering if the number of passengers on the New Statendam would so overwhelm some of the ports that have a population of 500-1500 that our experiences would be limited.

 

Would love to hear if you have been to any of the small ports on large ships and what your tours were like.

Yes, some of the towns have very little to see except for the architecture of the buildings and observing the lifestyle of the residents. There will always be a few shops. Book an excursion.  Iceland is a unique country.   Most of the shore excursions involve leaving the small towns and visiting sights that are unusual and/or beautiful.  Akureryi and Reykjavik  are good sized and the towns are interesting. I particularly enjoyed the botanical garden in Akureryi which is near the Artic Circle. 

Greenland is more isolated and unique in it own way.

We were on the 2018 version of the "Voyage of the Vikings" cruise.  It was one of our best cruise out of about 30. Were did not get bored at all.  We have not gotten tired of the Canadian ports after two NE/Canada cruises and the Vikings cruise.

You will definitely over run the smaller towns or those ports with limited sight seeing opportunities.  It reminds me of Flam Norway population something like 500.  Our first time we visited there were three ships with something like 6,000 guests.  It definitely impacted the experience.  Second time we were the only ship with around 700 onboard, much nicer.
