A few simple questions

At least I hope they are simple. Last year, we took our first cruise, my dh and I, along with our 6 children and my mother. Now, we are going again, but leaving our excess baggage (children and mother) at home....just the 2 of us!!

Anyhow, we are on the same ship, the Triumph, and leave March 25th. Since I wasn't concerned about having 3 rooms together, I put down a guarantee balcony A. When I check, they still haven't assigned a cabin yet. Also, when I check Carnival's site, or another, such as orbitz, there seems to be quite a few cabins still open, at least 10 in every catagory above ours, including the suites. My question, if for some reason they don't fill the upper levels or suites, do they just go ahead and fill them with the guarantee people?

How long before the cruise do they assign the room?

I've also noticed they haven't dropped the price on the carnival site (yet, some of the travel sites are offering free upgrades at lower price than I paid) If Carnival does drop their price before we sail, can I call them on it and get a credit for the difference?

We are both so excited, but haven't found a way to tell the kids yet! I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but this will at least start me out.

Thanks!

Actually not so simple:

The easiest answer to your question is "it all depends" if you book through carnival they have to give you the catagory room you paid for. IF you book outside, this can be changed BUT RARELY EVER is.. They would not upgrade you more then one catagory unless you paid for it (they would actually leave them empty)

Did you book through carnival? If you did you should be able to call them and find out your assigned room number. Otherwise is may depend on your TA or the booking site that you used. May depend on how many rooms they booked, price, discounts etc. All depends. What catagory are you guarenteed for?

Here we go again. Booking through Carnival, I bought a cruise for both of my married children's wedding anniversaries. I booked specific cabins and later on, called the Carnival pvp and just asked for free upgrades for them.

In both cases, they were upgraded from a cat 6d to a cat 12, on the upper deck. I am referring to the Esctacy.

Just yesterday my wife and I received a free upgrade from a gauranteed cat 6 on the empress to a verandah demi-suite. they also upgradred our two umarried daughters to the verandah demi-suite right next to us.

I don't know where the idea that you can not receive a free upgrade of more than one category comes from. Also, the cat 6s were both OV cabins, in every case.

When I check, they still haven't assigned a cabin yet. Your cabin assignment may not be made until you reach the pier. Don't sweat it. You will at least get a balcony.

My question, if for some reason they don't fill the upper levels or suites, do they just go ahead and fill them with the guarantee people? They will start bumping up the guarantee people. There doesn't seem to be a set of rules for the upgrades. The only people who are not moved are those who have booked a specific cabin. However, there is still a lot of time between now and your sailing date.

How long before the cruise do they assign the room? See above answer.

I've also noticed they haven't dropped the price on the carnival site (yet, some of the travel sites are offering free upgrades at lower price than I paid) If Carnival does drop their price before we sail, can I call them on it and get a credit for the difference? You must deal with the entity with whom you booked. If that is Carnival give them a call, it you used a TA, call them - it never hurts to ask. However, the free upgrades are usually for new bookings only. But again IT NEVER HURTS TO ASK. The worst they can do is say no.

Have a great time!

NO KIDDING??? Not this coming cruise but the last one I got Scr**ed.. pardon the french.. OH I am not a happy camper..

Maybe it was the ship or time of year / capacity.. but I was a first time cruiser and they said they can only upgrade me one level unless I paid for it. I asked if I waited would they bump me to a suite or something if they were available at the time of sailing and they said: "no - they would leave them empty if someone hadn't paid or earned an upgrade." At the time I had just bought a house so I had originally purchased and ocean view room.... they bumped me to the first floor of balconys. This was the Spirit.. UGGGGHH!..

Well at least on this one I choose my cabin carefully.. So can't wait. I am on the back right corner 7th floor with one of those wrap around balconys..

Well happy cruising.. sorry about my mistaken info. This is where you live and learn I guess. Thanks MeLuvDaSea

OCDactive, no problem. You are not the first person to make those observations. I just wonder why some people get upgrades and some don't. I do know that I deal with only one pvp per cruise and I call once a month and politely inquire about the upgrade. Maybe we've just been extraordinairly lucky so far.

We have an inside cabin booked on the QM2 for this december. The Cunard pvp said she would put us in for an upgrade. Here's hoping!! :o

My parents just sail on the QM2 last year.. they won a trip and paid for an upgrade to the princess level.. I couldn't believe the size of that ship, or the lavish private dining room they had... They really rubbed it in when they called an said their room is smaller then they are used to.. They only had one walk in closet!! LOL..

Happy Sailing.. Wish I could get on the ship!!!

Thanks for the help!!!

So, if you book a specific cabin you can not be upgraded? But if you are just a guarentee they can put you anywhere - even above the casino? That seems like a tricky call to make.

My parents booked us all specific rooms, so I should give up my fantasies of being upgraded from an interior to a suite? Darn!

I hate to tell you, Shelley (Timmy's Mom) but we booked a room R 148 on the Elation last month out of Galveston, I believe 6A (ov) and when we got our tickets, we were upgraded to a Cat 11, what some people call demi-suite on the Verandah deck.......with a partially obstructed view (read life boat in front, LOL) but it sure spoiled us for our next cruise cause we probably cant afford a balcony since all 3 (well 5 if u count the married ones) kids want to come with us next time.........
