Bathroom Facilities on Fanning Island?

Yvonne

Is it true that there are no bathroom facilities at Napali Beach on Fanning Island? I see you have to pay $25 per person to go there, and no restrooms?

How can that be? How can people spend any amount of time there with no restroom, especially those with small children?

What about the "free" beach, are there any restrooms there?

I just can't imagine no bathrooms!! Wow!!

We were there in May of 2002, and do not recall rest rooms there. I'm not up on the facilities there these days, as there was not much available at that time. There were a few "beach toys" for rent, the water was very shallow, not much of an area to walk to etc., so it wasn't a place where we stayed too long. At the time they charged $5, so it was an easy choice to make. It was also "blazing hot" there, floating on the rafts that were available, and even with lots of sun block, we got a little toasted.

We were on Fanning in April--no bathrooms on napali but nice facilities at the main town dock/beach and a shuttle boat between them. The BBQ lunch is served on the town dock/beach. That's also where the big straw market is and where the dive tour departs from. Also vehicle tours of the islands and several singing/dancing groups.

So do both--Napali early, then to town for lunch, shop, post office to send yourself a post card( ours arrived in Oct with a Christmas Island postmark).

NCL also sells soft drinks and beer on Napali--goes right on your cruise charge.

Several years ago NCL spent about $250,000 to import and install a dozen flush toilets and a septic system on the main compound at Fanning Island.

The next nearest flush toilets are over 500 miles away.

You may be surprised to find that Fanning Island is not one of the Hawaiian Islands. When you go ashore there, you will also be surprised to find that they have no shopping malls, Sams Club, Starbucks, or internet cafes. They have never seen shoes - except on the tourists.

You are not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy.

Very true but a beautiful place that I hope never becomes spoiled. We we took the 11 day a couple of years ago we had time to kill prior to getting on the ship. We walked around the shops adjacent to the docks and ended up talking with a gentleman in one of them. He told us some things about Fanning Island that we had never heard before. Anybody remember Gilligan's Island? Fanning Island is the opening shot for the show. Rent a bike and ride 3/4 of the way down the island until you come to a culvert pipe under the road/pathway. Stop. Look at the lagoon. Remind anybody of Gilligan's Island's lagoon? Although a set was created for filming, the lagoon area was based on an actual place on Fanning. We actually did this and we were floored....took pictures of everything and when we got home found Gilligan's Island still in reruns and taped one of the episodes. Compared the freeze frame video to the still photos from the island and the jaws hit the floor. If you go to Fanning Island please enjoy the island but leave it as you found it with only your footprints (and maybe a few $$) remaining.
