There are some great places in and around Hampshire to stay without using a Premier Inn or similar , as another member posted Winchester is not that far depending on traffic The Vine as they said is nice and the food is good , there are some fabulous pubs with rooms and you can take in the Hampshire Countryside which is lovely , shame not to see the area if you are in the UK

When we have short breaks or overnighters, we usually stay in a Premier. Comfortable and good value for money. But, when we're spending thousands on a cruise , it suits us to stay somewhere more luxurious the night before and get the holiday off to a great start. Now, that's good for us as we have the car with us but staying a distance away from the port may not be convenient for foreigners who may have to  then rely on public trasnport or a taxi to get to Soton. .
