I know that the operators of the dog sled excursion will give you glacier boots but can we wear sneakers or do I have to pack some sort of "high top shoe" - that 50 lb limit can be tough. Thanks.

Coastal, and I assume all others, offer boots that you slip on over your tennies. No need to worry about extra special shoes. The fifty pound limit is so ridiculous but we have to live with it as common travelers. With Alaska Airlines we are limited to two 50 pound bags unless we travel first class. We can then carry three 70 pound bags. I guess its all about the money and not the weight of the bag.
