Any suggestions on what there is to do there for a day? 

 

Can you hook onto tours/guides outside of the terminal?

If you have not already done so, suggest you look at previous threads and replies about Montevideo.

 

If you do not know how to use the SEARCH tool, go to the general S America Ports Forum (not an individual thread)and input the word MONTEVIDEO into the empty dearch box under your username.  Hit the little spy glass at the side and all prervious threads with that word in them will appear ready for you to read.  This quite recent thread might be a good starting point and an example of what should appear:
