Formal Dress Question

Recommended Posts

The impression I have had on cruises with two formal nights is there is somewhat less compliance with strict formal attire on the second formal night. (A tux becomes a dark jacket. A gown becomes a cocktail dress)

It appeared to me fewer men dressed up and if they did dress up it was to a lesser extent. For example, they wore a dark jacket instead of a tux. Furthermore, in the theater I saw a lot more men in shorts than on the first formal night. It is as if they don't want to comply at all the second time around.

Here's one guess why there is less compliance on the second formal night. I think that the first time, they rent tuxes, the wife wears a gown and they pose for formal portraits. The second formal night that isn't a priority unless they missed out the first formal night, so they wear less dressy clothing.

I have had cruises on RCI and Carnival ships. Maybe Chrystal Cruises, Celebrity and Cunard cruises are much more stringent about formal nights attire.
