Alaska Cruise: Tripod, Monopod, or Gimbal?

Recommended Posts

On my TA with Oceania Rivieria, I did neither.

In case if I needed to take a long exposure, I did have a gorilla pod.

Along with my Nikon Z7II, I brought a 12mm, 24-120 and a 50-500 sigma.

I lugged a tripod along for about 5 cruises and gave up. Even the small travel tripod is a pain with crowds and limited time on tours and such. A lightweight monopod can help if you have a long lens, but on a boat tour, engine vibration and wave motion negates any advantage. Slightly bent knees and optical and/or sensor-based stabilization is the way to go for me.

A $100 gimbal for a good phone would help for video if you do enough of it and unlike me, have a use for video. 😉

Enjoy! Alaska is a fantastic place for photography.
