kaymoz Posted July 5, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 5, 2023 We'd like to couple a land tour in Japan with a trans-Pacific sailing from the US/Canada, and wonder if it is better to do that sailing Westwards or heading East? FWIW, we live on the East Coast but are happy to sail from California, Florida, Hawaii or where-ever. We aren't interested in the South Pacific for this trip. Peelboy Posted July 30, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2023 I have done both. Sailing west in late so early fall is warmer and east in lte winter early spring much colder. Water can be rough for both. Transatlantic is much more comfortable than transpacific. Sailing east is at the peak of cherry blossom so you can do a wonderful land trip before the cruise.
BruceMuzz Posted July 30, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 30, 2023 Sailing East requires your ship to change the clock every other day or so. You will either lose an hour of sleep every other night (if they change the clock at night) or an hour during the day (if they change the clock in the afternoon). This does not seem like much of a problem - but after only a few days, many pax get grumpy and weird about dining times and other activities. Sailing West also requires your ship to change the clock every other day or so. But it is the reverse, giving you an extra hour of sleep at night or an extra hour in the middle of the day. Most cruise passengers find this procedure far more comfortable.
