We are going on a 7 night that stops in Costa Maya in November. Does anyone have suggestions for a good shore excursions? If you don't go on an excursion is there much to do close to the ship?

Right off the boat they have made a little village with a public swimming pool and shops and beach access. But you can also take a bus for a small charge to the little town where there are great beach areas with little restaurants that serve right on the beach. Go to the Costa Maya port board on this site for great information.

Hi,

We were there in December. We took the Chaucchaben ( excuse wrong spelling) tour through DCL. it was truly the BEST excursion we have ever done in 10 cruises. I would highly recommend it. The only bad thing is it is an hour bus ride to get there and back again, but the guide does give you a lot of information along the way. Our guide had several items she passed around for us to see and hold too. There is not much to see on the ride, just one small village area you pass by. It is pretty much just vegetation. You must pay a small fee if you use your cam corder, still pictures are ok. There are restrooms and a small gift shop there and a couple little snacks, but no real food, so eat hearty before you go. we left at noon and got back just in time to board the ship, 20 minutes to shop at the port. However we could of left the ship and shopped all morning before the tour too. If you take the private tour Ivan and David's you meet at the fishing village ( mentioned by above poster) Mahual or something like that, so you could go shopping in the morning there, have some mexican food, then do the excursion and get back just in time to board the ship. mPrivate tour is much cheaper, but if your bus breaks down and they run late the ship will NOT wait for you, howeverif you book through DCL and soemthing delays you they WILL wait. Just something to think about.

At the end of the pier there is some shopping, a nice pool with a swim up bar and there is a beach and chairs to sit at, but it is rocky and you cant get to the water. This is a new area, only 4 years old. They are building there as I write to add on,so you may find more than we did. It is pretty much a tiny area, and that is all there is, just jungle all around. If you go, please take bug spray as it is quite buggy there and you'll need it. Itis quite beautiful too.

We did the Dolphin Swim excursion 3 weeks ago and it was great! You take a bus for about 1/2 hour to a private island w/ FREE cocktails!!! Then you watch a 5 min. video and suit up to swim with the dolphins. Interaction time is about 45 min. and you really get to be in there petting the dolphins. Then you can hang out all day there if you want (busses leave every hour on the hour).

As mentioned above, right off the ship is a neat little shopping area w/ pool and swim up bars. We also took a quick (5 min.) taxi ride to Majahual as well. Shopping, food, great beach!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't know if Disney offers the Kohunlich Mayan tour but it is GREAT!! It is really an all day tour with lunch at a fabulous place. This one was new - great buffet lunch & either punch or local beer. My son, who is a discriminating eater, really liked it.

The little pier is by the cruise industry so all of the regular shops are there. With a few extras thrown in. One shop only was open - but we had to hurry to our ship --we were the last tour back.

If you want to see Mayan ruins kept pristinely and everywhere - go there. They also have 1 place you go up & see the colored masks. Quite impressive. Next time - Cha.... or however it is spelled. ;)
