Sewage Smell on Grandeur?

Recommended Posts

We were on the Grandeur Western Caribbean cruise last summer and loved it with one exception. We were on the port side, deck 2. There was a persistent smell of sewage in our cabin and in the hallway. It would come and go but at times it was rather pungent. You even could smell it when you walked around deck 5 and got to that area of the ship. Some passengers complained but the crew said that they had no knowledge of there being such a smell. One person at the desk said that it was possible that it was the air conditioning. Because we had such a good time (despite the smell) and since the ports of call have changed somewhat, we are thinking about booking the same cruise again but are wondering if the "air" would be better on the starboard side. We are looking at an oceanview on the starboard side of deck 4. Any thoughts?

We had the same problem on the Carnival Holiday a few years ago. We never booked on that ship again and, in fact, never went on Carnival again. We also had the problem on the Celebrity Summit. I knew enough from our Holiday experience to insist on a different cabin. They accommodated me. It seems to happen to ships as they age. We love the Grandeur, but, given your experience, I'd book another ship. And, given what you said, we won't be booking the Grandeur again.

We are just off the Grandeur and I can tell you the smell was there - at times. You are right about deck 5. We were watching people on the pier at Costa Maya and the smell was quite strong. We never smelled it in the hallways though.

When we first opened the bathroom door of our cabin, the smell was overwhelming. Out room steward soon showed up to introduce himself and we mentioned it to him. He looked at one of the drains on the floor and noticed we were missing a black rubber doo-dad. (Must ward off evil odors, I imagine.) He called for the rubber doo-dad replacement specialist and the cabin smell was gone.

I also noticed the smell during the muster drill.

This problem happens on many ships. Must be something to do with the maze of plumbing. I guess there are leaks and odor from fermentation.

In 1999, we had the problem on the old Royal Princess on the Caribe deck. Thanksgiving cruise 2004 was the same on Granduer of the Seas in the hallway and the atrium.
